Round 3 – Allsvenskan Round-up

Just when it looked like AIK would be ending week two of the season in great style, having already dispatched Kalmar 2-1 on Monday, IFK Göteborg grabbed a last minute equaliser on Thursday at Råsunda as Gnaget goalkeeper Ivan Turina dropped two points for the home side. What should have been an easy take for the Croatian ‘keeper when Nordin Gerzić pumped a deep free-kick into the 6-yard box turned into a spilled catch which, after an agonising couple of seconds where it looked like the ball would be cleared, saw Hjálmar Jónsson stab the ball into the roof of the net to share the points in a game that neither side deserved to win.

Blåvitt had created the better of the first half chances but rarely threatened Turina’s goal; likewise, at the other end of the pitch, John Alvbåge had a quiet half in goal. The catalyst for change was the introduction just after the hour mark of Pontus Engblom for AIK. The youngster took just four minutes to open his account for the club, though he was prolific last season while on loan to Sundsvall. A left side ball was lobbed into the box by Lalawélé Atakora and some superb movement took Engblom between the IFK defenders. Engblom deftly chested down the ball and created a yard of space before a cool finish beyond Alvbåge looked to seal the three points for the home side until the usually reliable Croatian’s error.

Elsewhere, a Majeed Waris brace for Häcken helped to sink Mjällby and Åtvidaberg destroyed Gefle 6-1 to continue their perfect Allsvenskan start.

Sundsvall got off the mark with an impressive display against Syrinaska, with Kevin Walker, scorer of their first goal, and Pa Amat Dibba, who helped himself to two goals, looking particularly impressive.
